REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A BARBER IN MICHIGAN:
Metro Detroit Barber College requires students to have a high school diploma or an equivalent certification (GED). According to Michigan law, individuals must have completed at least the equivalent of a high school education as determined by the department, be at least 17 years old (with proof of age required), and possess good moral character. Additionally, students must successfully complete a minimum of 1,800 hours of study at a licensed barber college and pass an examination approved by the board and the department. Once these requirements are fulfilled, a state-mandated fee must be paid to the State of Michigan.
AFTER GRADUATION:
After graduation, students are eligible to take the State Barber Board Examination. Scheduling for the exam takes place approximately four weeks prior to the exam. An application accompanied by a money order for $80.00 is submitted to the State of Michigan who administers the exam. (If a student has been convicted of a felony, the State of Michigan may or may not allow the student to take the State of Michigan Barber Board exam.)
