Course Description:

UC Barber School MI Diploma Program provides comprehensive training in the art of barbering, covering foundational principles, safety protocols, modern hair cutting techniques, shaving methods, infection control practices, skin and scalp analysis, and necessary skills to prepare students for their state barber licensing exam and a successful career in the barbering industry. Students will combine practical and theoretical training daily with lectures and demonstrations. This program is an 1800 clock-hour course that runs 72 weeks.

COURSE GOALS:

1. History of Barbering

Understanding the historical development of the barbering profession.

2. Anatomy and Physiology

Studying the structure and function of the skin, hair, and scalp.

3. Infection Control

Learning Proper sanitation and disinfection procedures to maintain a hygienic work environment.

4. Tools and Equipment

Proper use and maintenance of barbering implements like shears, clippers, razors, combs, and more.

5. Haircutting Techniques

Mastering various haircutting techniques including fades, layering, texturizing, and design work.

6. Shaving Techniques

Detailed instruction on razor shaving, including beard trimming, and facial hair design.

7. Chemical Services

Basic knowledge of chemical treatments and hair coloring.

8. Client Consultation

Learning how to effectively communicate with clients to understand their needs and desired styles.

9. Ethics/Business

Developing professional demeanor, customer service skills, and understanding of salon management.

Course Format

The barbering course is taught in English and will be a combination of lecture, problem solving, question and answer, role-playing, competitions, student presentations/projects, classroom activities/games, demonstration, and student participation. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of cosmetology theory and application ability through their completion of the required practical and clinical activities. Instruction will be supplemented with guest artists, visual aids, and other instructional techniques.

TOTAL HOURS: 1800

Course Evaluation:

Written exams are given at the end of each unit of study. During the unit of study where practical procedures need to be completed, they will also be evaluated. Students are assigned a minimum number of lab requirements. Students are given progress reports during their training. Upon completion of their training students’ evaluations are based on written and practical applications and lab work.

GRADING SYSTEM USED FOR ALL TESTS IS AS FOLLOWS:

A-100%-90% ………………… Excellent

B-89%-80% ………………….. Good

C-79%-75% ………………….. Satisfactory

D- Below74% ………………….. Failure


ATTENDANCE:
All students are expected to attend classes and be involved in the learning process. Thirty-five hours per week attendance is required unless specific curriculum changes have been approved. Students must be checked in by 8:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. daily. Any student who is late cannot check in unless authorized by the school director. If a student is repeatedly tardy or absent, they are subject to suspension.

Course Description:
UC Barber School MI Student Barber Instructor Diploma Program provides comprehensive theoretical training

developing the necessary skills to effectively teach barbering techniques, including theoretical knowledge of hair structure, sanitation practices, various haircutting methods, razor techniques, client consultation, and business ethics, while also emphasizing the ability to create comprehensive lesson plans, deliver hands-on instruction, assess student progress, and prepare students for state licensing exams. This program is 1000 clock hours and runs 12 months (52 weeks).

COURSE GOALS:
Upon completion of this course, the student shall have demonstrated practical skills, theoretical knowledge, key competencies required to pass the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulations examination and the ability to:


1. Psychology and Methodology: These classes focus on the theory of teaching, using Milady’s Master Educator textbook, including weekly tests.

2. Student Teaching: You will learn to write lesson plans and do actual teaching from your lesson plans. There will be a practical teaching evaluation of your teaching skills.

3. Objectives: Upon completion of the course requirements, the determined graduate will be able to:

- Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.

- Practice proper grooming and effective communications skills and visual poise.

- Understand employer-employee relationships and respect the need to deliver a worthy service for value received.

- Perform the basic skills necessary for teaching including writing lesson plans, performing demonstrations, directing Future Professionals projects, using library resources and audiovisual aids, supervising lab floor operations.

- Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, wardrobe style and color application for the client’s total image.

- Apply the theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.

To ensure continued career success, the graduate will continue to learn new and current information related to techniques, trends, fashions, and methods for career development in cosmetology and related fields.
